Hiring Tools and Equipment

a straightforward guide on the type of hire tools used for building projects.

Construction Equipment

Breaking Up Concrete

A HILTI Electric Breaker is the perfect tool for breaking up concrete floors, walls, driveways and patios. They come in 3 different sizes, the one here is medium duty which is capable of most tasks. The smaller version is more handheld and you would use for removing old bathroom tiles and jobs similar to that. You can hire these for a very reasonable price from HSS, SPEEDY, or your local tool hire company.

Construction Equipment Hire Guide

Cutting Concrete Perfectly Straight

A STIHL Cut Off Saw can be used for cutting bricks, paving slabs and any concrete where you need a straight line to be made. If you are making a new door or window opening then this tool is ideal to get the straight line in the brickwork that you need.

Most Commonly Used Construction Equipment

Mixing Mortar and Concrete

If you need to mix cement (for bricklaying, patios, footings etc.) you can hire a BELLE cement mixer from your local tool and plant hire shop. These are quite large units so if you are unable to transport this your hire company will offer delivery for a fixed charge. You can get either an electric mixer or a petrol powered version.

Construction Tools and their Uses

Sawing Large Quantities of Wood

You can hire a compound mitre saw if you have a project which requires multiple pieces of timber which need cutting accurately. Fitting wood flooring, erecting stud work and installing roof joists are some common applications where this tool will save you a lot of time and hard work.

Compound mitre saws are especially useful if you need to cut timber at an angle, so come into their own on jobs like a parquet flooring install.

Equipment Used in Residential Construction Projects

Floor Sanding

Floor Sanders are available to hire at a reasonable cost and can transform your existing wooden floorboards. Just remember to hire a smaller edging sander as well because the unit like the one shown doesn’t get perfectly tight to the skirting boards.

They are very straightforward to use, and if you learn the process with a few YouTube tutorials you could even hire a labourer to undertake this project for you. You’ll need high quality dust masks and ear protectors also recommended.

Types of Equipment Used for Home Refurbishment

Working at Height

Access Towers like (this TB Davies Contractor Tower) are available to purchase from Toolstation, or you can hire a similar unit from HSS or SPEEDY if you have some work which needs to be carried out safely at height. Check with your Subbie which type of platform they need, as bricklaying at height usually requires bandstands and scaffold boards – as opposed to a tower like this one.

Construction Hire Tools and their Uses Explained

Digging Out Driveways / Footings

If you need to dig out your driveway, install footings for an extension, or clear your garden for landscaping then you can hire a JCB Mini Digger from your local plant hire shop. They will deliver the digger for a fixed fee, and hire is not as expensive as you might think.

If you require a digger and a driver we recommend contacting Lynch Plant Hire, who offer an operated digger hire service. It’s not particularly cheap but their drivers are very experienced (work extremely quickly!) and carry out the necessary insurance certificates.

Equipment Used in Self Build Construction

Driveway / Patio Cleaning

Tool hire companies offer high pressure, petrol powered pressure washers which are considerably more powerful than any of the cheap Karcher units which you can buy (which are much more suited to car cleaning).

An increasingly popular pressure washing job is cleaning roof tiles, for which you would also require the necessary pole attachments, as well as an access tower / platform.

Specialist Construction Propping Equipment

Propping and Lifting

For advanced construction work you acrow props and Genie Lifts are also available to hire. Genie Lifts are incredibly useful for a range of tasks, for example if you have a cast iron bath which is too heavy to lift up the stairs and you would prefer it done more safely. Just check the dimensions of the Genie Lift to make sure you have the required access, they do come in different sizes and all have a different weight capacity.
