Recycling, Reclamation and eBay

how to manage your building waste and even make some money.

Aim to Recycle as much as Possible
Try to separate your building waste when loading it into rubble sacks and it will be easy to offload at your local Council Recycling Centre. Some centers have now started charging fees for waste, so check their website first as it may work out cheaper just to higher a skip.

Dealing with old Appliances
You have a few options when it comes to unwanted refrigerators, washing machines etc.

1. You can arrange for your Local Recycling Centre to collect your unwanted appliances for a small charge.
2. The retailer you are are buying your new appliances from may have an option to collect your old appliance when you checkout. Currys and AO.com certainly offer this service.
3. If your appliance is in working order you can give it a clean and list it on eBay.

Fixtures and Fittings
If you have a reclamation yard nearby then it’s worth seeing if they are interested in anything you are disposing of, architectural salvage is big business. Don’t discount newer, non-period items, as you’d be surprised at what use these still have. If it is in usable, working condition, then it will be worth something to someone.

Again, listing and selling on eBay is a great option if you have the storage space, and especially if you have any older, period pieces.

Old Bricks and Tiles have value
Old bricks and clay tiles are in high demand, some people need enough to build a whole extension with but there are also lots of homes which require a small repair job and they require the exact items you are throwing away.

If you have the time then it’s definitely worth trying to recycle any items from your project that you can, and you’ll often make more money selling these kind of items than you’d think.

Period Items always Sell Well
Anything with age will always sell well if it is in reasonable condition, and you should certainly aim to recycle as much as you can from any home refurbishment project. Just take some extra care when removing items and you will likely be able to make some money back on them.

More Ideas for Reclamation
Don’t discount:
Old Worktops
ANY Windows or Doors
Door Handles / Ironmongery
Garden Paving (especially flagstones)
Metal Gates / Railings
Any Internal Fittings (glass lamps etc.)

These are all items which will sell, and can turn a good profit.

Helping the Planet feels Great
When undertaking any home improvement project recycling whichever items you possibly can is a valid reason to feel proud of yourself.

Try not to discount items based on your personal taste, a builder might need a cheap temporary bathroom, and your old suite could be local for collection and perfect for this need.

There is far too much waste in the world, and something even as basic as selling some old door handles you are getting rid of has to be a good thing!
